One of the fields of engineering that you may choose to specialise in is electrical engineering. Electrical engineers are often called in to work on buildings after the initial framework has been built. They are the ones who will handle running all of the electrical cables through a new building. They are in charge of wiring light fixtures and switches, putting in electrical outlets, hooking the air conditioning and heating system into the building’s electrical grid, and even setting up the fire alarm system. Often, they work with the local power company to connect the building to the city’s power grid.

Electrical engineers need to know how electrical current works and how to control it. They have to know how to set up electrical circuits so that power can be turned on and off safely. Because electrical systems can actually start fires if not installed correctly, electrical engineers must pass various certifications and exams before they can actually start work. Several safety courses are also required.

Like most construction work, apprenticeships in electrical engineering are available. These apprenticeships help new workers learn their trade while at the same time giving them the practical, real world experience that is necessary for some certifications.
