Moving up the Ladder

As with any industry, people in the construction industry often look for advancement. While they may love their position and the work they do, no one wants to stay at the same job level for their entire life. Getting a promotion, after all, almost always involves getting a raise, and everyone needs more money. In the construction world, moving up the ladder isn’t exactly the same as it is in a business environment.

In construction, there are several ways to get promoted. One is to gain the necessary licenses to move into a specialized position. These include plumbing, electrical, and heating/air specializations. Getting these licenses usually involves a combination of passing exams and gaining practical, hands-on training in the field.

Another way of advancing is to move up to a management position. This involves having the necessary knowledge to complete your tasks, getting things done before their deadlines, and showing initiative. Often, staying with the same construction company for a number of years also leads to a management position. Before becoming a crew manager, you may be promoted to a shift manager or other middle-management position. These positions are often training positions that allow upper management to see how well employees do with the lesser responsibilities before promoting them to higher positions.
