How to Become a Marine Engineer

If you’re interested in becoming a marine engineer, you really have two choices: you can join the royal navy, or you can look into attending a university that offers marine engineering as a focus. You may be surprised to learn that there are actually a number of different universities and institutes that offer marine engineering, and many of them offer top of the line programs. There are both governmental and private institutions that offer marine engineering as well.

If you wish to attend a government sponsored university, you may want to look at Aberdeen College, Lewis Castle College, Liverpool John Moores University, the University of Glasgow, or the University of Ulster. However, in addition to these institutes, there are a number of governmental schools focused on maritime education. These include the Fleetwood Nautical Campus, the Glasgow College of Nautical Studies, the Greenwich Maritime Institute, the Lairdside Maritime College, and the Institute of Marine Studies at the University of Plymouth.

As far as private universities go, there’s Bournemouth University, Jewel & Esk Valley College, Orkney College, Southampton Solent University, and Wray Castle. Of course, there are also some private maritime-focused institutes like the Cambridge Academy of Transport, the London Institute of Shipping and Transport, the National Sea Training College, and the Red Ensign Maritime Training.
