When most people think of construction or engineering, they think of building buildings or creating prototype models in a workshop. However, there are some aspects of construction and engineering that focus more on maintaining buildings after the construction phase is finished. Working in this field of engineering often means working at physical plants, or the main hub of air conditioning, heating, and electrical systems.

One place these plants are found is on university campuses. Another place may be a large corporate headquarters or a large laboratory. No matter where they are, these plants house the most of the structure’s power system and more. If there’s ever a power outage, a malfunction in the heating or cooling, or some other mechanical failure, it’s these engineers who are called upon to correct the issue.

Working at one of these locations often means being familiar with many different systems and mechanical devices. While you may be hired on as an air and heating specialist, you may also have to occasionally help repair a plumbing problem or take a look at a broken light fixture. This is especially true at small companies where the engineering staff and the maintenance staff are in the same department.
